On the 1st Saturday of May, each year, The Kentucky Derby race day takes place. This event is fast becoming as known for it’s fashion; and is a close to our Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot as you can get.
However, whilst we do see more elaborate hats at the Derby than we do of any other American event, the dress code is significantly more relaxed than at Royal Ascot. Whilst wearing a hat is encouraged, it is not a necessity; and a huge amount of lady’s opt for no headwear at all!
“Wearing a hat to the Kentucky Derby is believed to bear good luck…..From the fantastic to the sublime, there are no rules or limits.” (https://www.kentuckyderby.com/visit/what-to-wear)
Whilst a lot of lady’s do join in with the feel of the day, a lot of the styles worn are “safer” than such eccentric pieces that you might see at Royal Ascot.
And we even see some very casual hats worn by ladies…..
That being said….it wouldn’t be a race day without some extreme designs on show….
I believe fashion should be fun, so I don’t mind seeing ladies’ wearing unusual, almost comical hats. But, as a milliner I’m always going to be more interested to see some beautiful millinery; here are some of my favourites from this year….
Ohhhh….just looking at all of these wonderful hats is getting me excited for our very own Royal Ascot!
